Hello C_R_B,
Sadly Apple have made it very hard to create direct drivers for apple now with the new OS. That means that you now are using air print driver from apple itself. I would highly recommend trying to remove the printer from the Mac and then add it again to see if a reset on the printer settings will resolve your problem. Else try and download HP Smart and try and print via the HP Smart app to see if there is any changes to your printouts.
