The printer prints color pictures from my iPhone, and the Printer Status Report (printed from my MacBook Pro) shows that the colors print fine as well. However, when I try to print color pictures from the MacBook, it always automatically prints in black and white. Also, there is never an option to print in color. I've tried uninstalling the printer and installing it again, but that didn't change anything. All of my programs are up to date.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Ensure that the printer is up to date with its firmware and Mac is up to date with its software. If you are unsure you may use the links below to update the printer firmware and Mac software:

I'm having the same issue and updating software didn't fix the problem. Everything is completely up to date. Still there is no setting anywhere to switch to color printing from my mac. Just plain ridiculous that such a basic function is so difficult. It renders this printer borderline useless.

@RMurray123, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
I understand you are not able to print in color from the Mac.
If the printer is able to make color copies, it means the printer hardware is working fine and this is a driver issue.
Check the print settings, make sure the 'Black and White' box is not checked.
You may refer to - Print Settings Guide (Mac)
Have you used the HP smart app to print from your Mac and check if that helps?
You may download it from the App Store.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check for any software updates on Mac
Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.
Install the printer using the AirPrint driver.
1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.
3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.
4.) Click the plus sign click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.
5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.
Note: Select "Bonjour multifunction" under kind while installing.
Try printing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Unfortunately none of this worked. I've tired upgrading the firmware using the HP firmware updater and it's giving me the following errors even though this is for the Envy Pro 6400 series (I have the 6458).
"The Firmware updater does not contain upgrades for this device"
Also my print screens don't look like what you have shown in the screen shot. I don't have those settings available. I don't even have a check box for black and white. There is no setting to c change from black and white to color.
Again, this all works fine on my laptop running high Sierra. So I know it's a Catalina issue that seems to have not been sorted out with the latest firmware or software updates. It seems as though color printing is not possible with newer Mac computers.

You guys keep telling people to update the firmware but that doesn't actually fix the problem. We've all done that and still doesn't work.
Your latest firmware is still not compatible with OS Catalina and beyond. You should either advertise that with the printer compatibility, or get a firmware version that fixes the security issue that is preventing HP from access printer settings in the OS.

Have you tried using the HP Smart app to print and check if that helps?
Download the latest version 12.7.1 from the App Store.
Keep me posted.

Yes, don’t insult my intelligence. I’ve done all
the setup and the printer works for black and white. Why would I even be asking this question if I hadn’t setup the app? Like seriously?
You guys are useless and this product belongs in a trash can. Just tell the truth and be honest with people in both your support and advertising that this printer is just not compatible with new Mac computers. It’s PC only and we all know that.
how about you offer me a refund instead of giving the quick start guide of how to setup the pro taker like I’m 90yrs old and have never used an app or a printer before.
what a joke.

The HP Smart app is a waste of time. I installed this printer months ago. When I found that 'solution' I tried opening the app and all it did was tell me I hadn't finished installing the printer (I've been using it for months!!) and then it locked up my computer with a window that said it was completing the installation... but oh-no, only a spinning wheel that went nowhere.
I've only just recently needed color copies of a document and realized I can't find an option to print in color ANYWHERE!
There is no box to choose B&W or Color from the print window.
And before anyone asks... YES, all updates have been done.
