I am using an iPad with a HO Envy and have had the setup working for years.
Suddenly my printer isn’t getting print commands from inside any of my apps, including Pages or documents I want to print form the safari browser. I was about to just buy another printer and then I thought I should try printing and scanning from the HP Smart App. Then I could print out bu on,y if documents are exported out of applications or as pdf or joeg into photos.
‘obviously this is a problem — was there an iOS update that isn’t compatible with the HP ENVY or did the printer develop a problem. I was gettting some stray error messages like printer is unavailable WHILE it was printing just fine. Is there a fix or is it dying?
‘Advice for iOS iPAD Pro and HPSmart mobile app only. Please.

Hi @tisheast,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing with your iPad and HP Envy printer. It’s especially frustrating when everything was working smoothly before. Let’s try to figure this out and get your setup back to normal.
- Have you noticed if your iPad and printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, or have there been any changes to your network setup recently?
- When you print from an app, does the printer appear as an option in the AirPrint list, or does it not show up at all?
- Have you received any specific error codes or messages on the printer or in the HP Smart app?
Let's try these steps
Restart Devices: Turn off your iPad, printer, and Wi-Fi router. Wait for about 30 seconds before turning them back on, starting with the router, then the printer, and finally the iPad.
Check AirPrint Connectivity: Ensure your printer is AirPrint-compatible (most HP Envy printers are). Go to any app, select “Print,” and check if the printer shows up. If not, verify it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad.
Reinstall HP Smart App: Delete and reinstall the HP Smart app on your iPad. Once reinstalled, reconnect your printer to the app and check if the problem persists.
Update iOS and Printer Firmware: Make sure your iPad is running the latest iOS version and check for printer firmware updates using the HP Smart app. Open the app, select your printer, and look for a “Printer Update” option.
Reset Printer’s Network Settings: On the printer, reset its network settings to default (refer to the printer manual for instructions). Then, reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network through the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
