HP Envy Pro 6430
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I leave my HP Envy printer for more than a day, it won't print from any device unless I unplug it and plug it back in again. Always. It's less than a month old and has done it since new. My brother has the same printer (the reason I bought one too) and the same broadband provider and (crucially) the same router. He does not have this problem.

Usually I've tried to print either from my phone or my Windows computer. The same thing happens in each case: printer offline or printer not ready.

The fix is to lean over the back, pull out the plug, wait for 10 seconds and then plug it in again. Every. Single. Time. I don't print that much, so going a couple of days between use is my norm. Plus I'm on instant ink so I assume (?) that's why the power button does nothing.

I can't find any way to contact and actual support human (and I've spent a loooong time going through useless, pointless automated "help" services).

Please help! It's driving me crazy. Other than that, I'm really happy with it.

@Carajp, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Make sure the printer and the PC are connected to the same wireless network.
  • If you have a Dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both the networks.

Let us assign a static/manual IP address to the printer to resolve this issue:

Make sure the printer and the computer are connected before following these steps.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

This sounded like a very sensible solution, so I sat down to try it. I hadn't used my printer for 3 days.

Firstly, to my surprise, a test print of your email worked. The wireless light on the printer is unlit, so I wasn't expecting that.

Then I tried to print some status reports (Network configuration, Wireless Network Configuration Page). Neither worked, both gave an error report about status not being available

Tried scanning. Printer not found.

Tried printing a random document. Working again.

Scanning again - worked this time

Network configuration page - worked: Network Status "ready", Active Connection "Wireless", has a network address etc and all looks well

Next, Wireless Network Test Results Page:

"ATTENTION The wireless radio is not functioning. Contact HP support."

Wireless on: Pass

Wireless Working: Fail

Most other tests (quite reasonably) not run. But under "Connectivity" it says "Disconnect count total 1" and disconnect in last hour and last 24hrs are both zero.

So, I then printed another random 1 page document. Which worked just fine.

Finally I printed a document from my mobile phone - this almost never goes well. But it worked just fine!

I note that the blue wireless light of the printer is unlit. I'm pretty sure it's usually lit because I noticed it at once - but maybe my heightened awareness made me alert to things that look different.

At this point, I haven't restarted the printer nor carried out your suggestions. Because I have literally no idea of what's going on.

Thanks for your response.

Regards

Caroline

@Carajp

It looks like the wireless card in the printer has gone bad. It is working intermittently. This is a hardware failure. It may work sometime, and then quit working.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

Oh no.....oh no. This is a disaster. You can't get these printers for love nor money at the moment. Makes me want to cry. 😞
