I need to update my printer, but is says it is locked by administrator when I click on the buttons.  How do I get into the administrator area.  I am the one that set up the printer, but do not recall setting anything to administrator, as a matter of fact, I have just updated the printer before and have never had a problem.  No everything says locked by administrator

Hi  @tolson1218

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that your HP ENVY was working normally before and that you are now seeing a "Locked by Administrator" message when trying to access printer settings or perform an update. I'll be glad to help.

To better understand the situation, kindly share the following details:

  • Is the printer connected to a home network or a workplace/school network?
  • When did you first notice the "Locked by Administrator" message?
  • Have there been any recent changes to your Wi‑Fi network, HP account, or printer settings?
  • Are you able to print and scan normally, or are other features affected as well?

In the meantime, kindly try the following steps:

  1. Verify the HP app:
    • Open HP and ensure you are signed in with the HP account that was originally used to set up the printer.
    • Check whether the printer shows as connected and online.
  2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Print a Network Configuration Report or locate the printer's IP address from the printer display.
    • Enter the IP address into a web browser.
    • If prompted for administrator credentials, try signing in with any administrator password that may have previously been configured.
  3. Check for Administrator Settings:
    • From the printer control panel, navigate to Settings  - Security (if available).
    • Review whether an administrator password has been enabled.
  4. Restore Network Settings:
    • If the issue appears to be related to network administration settings, restoring only the network settings may help reconnect the printer and refresh access permissions.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
