Hello,

Try the following solution:

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to a network.

  2. On the control panel, print a report of your network configuration.

  3. Look at the bottom of the page
    Example PIN Number:
    Pin Number.png

  4. The magic is the SSID written as Current SSID, the password written as Network Key and the buildin IP address.

  5. Now, connect with a machine with a wifi adapter such as a computer, to the SSID and type in the mentioned password.

  6. Login to the Embedded Web Server with admin and the password written as PIN Number.

  7. Apply the latest firmware from https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/ColorLaserMFP178_179_V3.82.01.12.zip.

  8. Change at least the admin password.

Don't hesitate to contact us in case of need.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I just loged in via EWS and just used the PIN number and it worked.

Why is that nowhere else mentioned??

Holy **bleep** - this will defintely be my first and very last HP printer. There is bad UX and then there is this.

Mans reply is the only bright side so far.

I checked the firmware download site: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laser-mfp-170-printer-series/24494365/mode... and the firmware release date reads JAN 17, 2022.

So, yeah - "brand new" me think, "need to downlaod asap" me think, hence all the hassle with the admin login etc.

Fire up the firmware assistant:

FirmwareNew VersionCurrent Version
Main FirmwareV3.82.01.12 JAN-27-2021V3.82.01.12 JAN-27-2021

BRAVO! So, is there a new Version from JAN 17th, 2022 and it's incorrectly named in the firmware or is the firmware release date on the website bs?
