Dear HP Community,

I have been trying to connect my HP LaserJet 1020 to my MacBook Pro (M1, 2020) running the latest version of macOS, but I have been unable to make it work despite attempting all possible solutions found online.

Here is what I have tried so far:

  • Installing various HP drivers, including Gutenprint and CUPS, but HP LaserJet 1020 is not listed (only 1022 appears).
  • Adding the printer via System Preferences > Printers & Scanners manually, but the job gets stuck in the queue with "Waiting for job to complete."
  • Connecting the printer via a shared Windows PC and adding it as a network printer, but macOS still fails to print properly.
  • Checking multiple online resources and forums for alternative solutions.

It seems that HP has not developed a compatible driver for this macOS version. Is there any alternative solution to make this printer work on macOS, or is it simply unsupported at this point?

I would appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Hi @eerol

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems you're facing an issue with older HP printers

1. Use AirPrint (macOS Built-in Support)

Some older HP printers, including the HP LaserJet 1020, may support AirPrint, which is macOS’s built-in wireless printing feature. Even if HP doesn't provide a specific driver for your printer on macOS, AirPrint might allow you to print from your Mac.

Here’s how to check if AirPrint is available:

  • Go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners".
  • Click the "+" to add a new printer.
  • In the list of available printers, see if your HP LaserJet 1020 shows up with an AirPrint option in the “Use” dropdown menu.
  • If it does, select it and try printing

I hope this helps.
