I inherited an HP LaserJet Printer 1200 and I'm having trouble downloading the drive. When I try to install the HP Smart for Desktop app. (version 5.6.1) I get the following message: "HP Smart can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because macOS version 10.13 or later is required." My Mac is currently operating on macOS Sierra version 10.12.6. When I go to see if there are any software updates, it shows none. So I don't know how I'd be able to install version 10.3 or later. Basically, I need to know what I need to do to make the printer talk with my computer so I can print. Thank you.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues installing the printer on your Mac computer.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
HP LaserJet 1200 driver for macOS 10.12 is not available from the HP website or Apple Software Update. However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.
NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
