What driver will my system, running under a new Windows 10 installation, accept for this old LaserJet 5P ? This is a critical printer I use (and need) for my operations!

Hi:
See if this works...
Download and save the 4th driver on the list (64 bit).
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=%20LaserJet%205P%20
Download and install this free file utility. The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.
After you install 7-Zip, right click on the printer driver file you saved.
Select 7-Zip from the list of options.
Have 7-Zip Extract to: And let it extract the file into its long folder name. Ignore any generated errors.
Once that is done, add your printer, and when you get to the part where you are asked to install the driver, click on Have Disk, and browse to the printer driver folder 7-Zip created>prnhp001 (setup information file)>select the HP LaserJet 5L printer from the list, and the driver should install.

This did not work! I see the prnhp001 Setup Information, but when I select the HP LaserJet 5P driver when Adding Printer,
an error message shows "Unable to install printer." "Cannot complete this function". My printer is the LaserJet 5P and you said to select LaserJet 5L - is this driver the one I need to install rather than the one shown for my 5P??

Sorry - but your answer doesn't work and windows is "unable to install printer". In previous windows 10 upgrades, HP Laserjet 5P was installed with a virtual USB Port since there's a cable connection to the LPT port on the printer and plugs ino a USB port on the computer. This New windows installation isn't even recognizing the 5P printer to install a USB vitual port!

I have 2 PC using W10 64 bit, version 1079 using the suggested drivers for HP LaserJet 5P.
I tried these drivers on a new installation with W10 64 bit and the drivers weren't accepted.
Solution:
I shared the printer HP LaserJet 5 on a computer where the driver is working. Using this network's share, the driver is transferred to the new PC and the HP LaserJet 5 appears in the list of Windows printer. You have just to select it.
Test printer data:
The pilote is HP LaserJet 5P Type 3- Mode utilisateur version 6.1.7233.0.
Additional files are added by this driver on "C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3\" directory
TTFSUB.GPD, UNIRES.DLL, STDNAMES.GPD, STDDTYPE.GDL, STDSCHEM.GDL, STDSCHMX.GDL, PCL5ERS.DLL
On Windows, the properties of this driver are: ( in french, sorry)
Nom du pilote : printqueue.inf
GUID de classe : {1ED2BBF9-11F0-4084-B21F-AD83A8E6DCDC}
Date du pilote : 06/21/2006
Version du pilote : 10.0.16299.15
Fournisseur du pilote : Microsoft
Section du pilote : NO_DRV_LOCAL
Classement du pilote : 0x1
Numéro d'identification d'appareil correspondant : PRINTENUM\LocalPrintQueue
Pilotes surclassés : oem25.inf:hewlett-packardhp_lae238:00FF0002 c_swdevice.inf:SWD\GenericRaw:00FF3001
Appareil mis à jour : false
Appareil parent : SWD\PRINTENUM\PrintQueues
Does the HP drivers using the same driver version are really similar?
I hope that my way to solve the problem may helps you .
I wish you that you will be able to use this exceptional printer yet.

I don't know if this would help you but I just installed the driver using 2 ways.
1) I downloaded the HP scan doctor and let it work.
2) I also bought and used a USB to Parallel Adapter which came with instructions for installing the adapter using "USB Printing 'Support" under "USB Controllers." Then I added the driver by selecting "USB001 Virtual print port for USB"
Don't know which of these tactics did the trick but now I have salvated a working printer with practically new ink cartridge which may last a lifetime. Those old ink cartridges were enormous and longlasting.
Good luck to anyone else tired of those ink cartridges. The printing is very slow, so you have to be patient.
