HP LaserJet M209dwe Printer

Hello everyone!

My HP LaserJet M209dw printer,  has become completely unresponsive and cannot be set up or connected in any way.

Symptoms:

  • The small LCD screen is completely dark (no lights, icons, or messages).

  • After starting printer up, the front strip light "waiving" blue for 1 minute.

  • After one minute the front strip light blinks white continuously.

  • There is no Wi-Fi indicator light (blue or amber).

  • The printer is not broadcasting a Wi-Fi Direct network (no “DIRECT-xx” network visible).

  • The printer is not discoverable via the HP Smart app on iPhone or Mac.

  • The printer has no USB-B port and thus cannot be connected to a computer via USB for firmware recovery.

  • I have tried all known hardware reset button combinations (including holding Wireless + Cancel + Info during power-on), with no success.

  • What I have tried:

  • New toner installed.

  • Reset Wi-Fi by holding Wireless + Cancel for 5+ seconds.

  • Attempted a full factory reset via Wireless + Cancel + Info during power-up.

  • Attempted HP Smart setup on both iPhone and Mac.

  • Verified no DIRECT-HP or IP address broadcast.

  • Downloaded the latest firmware from the HP site but cannot use it due to lack of USB connectivity.

Given that there is no way to access the printer or recover the firmware, I believe this may be a firmware lockup or mainboard failure. I would appreciate guidance on any additional recovery steps available.

@kpvj, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Power Cycle

Unplug the printer completely from the wall.

Wait 1 minute, then plug it back in and power on.

Observe the front light and screen.

Check Wi-Fi Direct

After reset, check your phone/laptop for a Wi-Fi Direct network like DIRECT-xx-HP.

If visible, connect to it and try setup again using the HP Smart app.

Try HP Smart Setup Again

Install or open HP Smart on your phone or PC.

Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Try to add printer from HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you so much for response!

I followed your instructions - 1. the screen does not show any lights at all (completely dark); the front light (strap) keeping blue and kind of waiving fro exactly one minute. After that just turning white blinking  and printer getting irresponsive anymore. 2. There is no Wi-Fi Direct network like DIRECT-xx-HP. (Not visible.) 3. Installed HP Smart, but because printer is not visible, my MAC is not finding it.  So HP Smart did not help.

Need to mention that all these steps I was trying to take during one minute only, as after printer just getting irresponsive with white light blinking on the front. I mean, it took me couple of attempts to accomplish all these steps.  If I would be able to get, at least, blue connecting lights on display.... But display completely dark, there are no even blinks...

Any other steps I might take?

Hi @kpvj,

Thank you for the detailed update, truly appreciate your patience and effort in trying all those steps.

From what you've described, no response from the display, no Wi-Fi Direct broadcast, and a persistent white blinking light after startup, your HP LaserJet M209dw may be experiencing a firmware lockup or hardware controller board failure.

Extended Power Reset (Deep Discharge Method)

Sometimes residual power can cause lockup.

Turn OFF the printer.

Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.

Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds while it is unplugged.

Wait 5+ minutes.

Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or UPS).

Power the printer back ON.

Observe the LED pattern and display again.

I hope this helps.

TThank you for trying to help me. I followed all your steps - No results. So, I decided to try to connect printer using USB cable, and I was able to finish installation of the HP Smart just by connecting printer using USB Cable - NO Wireless, unfortunately! The blue wireless light on the screen is blinking, but never solid, when I am trying to "find" printer using HP Smart - no results. MORE OF tHAT - my printer is ON (in ready mode, when blue strap on it's body front is waiving) FOR 1 MINUTE ONLY (?!) after that front strap/light is starting to blink white, display getting off - printer irresponsive! To switch it off I need to keep power button pressed for 10 seconds (other way white blinking light is not getting off), When it is finally off - one short click on power button - blue strap on front body waiving again- blue wireless light on display is blinking -- and all this for 1 minute only! Than white light blinking - printer irresponsive again... To finish installation using USB cable I made number of attempts to be able to finish every step during this 1 minute until printer was getting to white blinking "mode"...
