I've had intermittent problems printing wever since I installed Windows 10, but now when I attempt to use the Print and Scan doctor, the application gets stuck In the initial Searching for Product process, and when I go to the Support Assistant to download updates, the process gets stuck in the Gathering Configuration Information. So it's like something is blocking the processes. I switched the connection to another port in my desktop tower, but that didn't help.

Hello, @hbny – Hope you are well 🙂
Welcome back to the HP Forums, I'd be happy to help you with your printer issue!
Going through your post, it looks like an issue with the printer drivers installed on your PC. Let’s try a clean install to try and fix the issue:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
- Go to Control Panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control Panel – Devices and Printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Restart your computer.
- Now, click HP LaserJet P1006 Printer to download and install the software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Good luck 🙂

DVortex:
It didn't work. When I went to the Control Panel/Programs, the list incluides HP LaserJet P1000 Series (that's the only listing), but the fields for Publisher, Size, and Version are blank. I tried to uninstall it, but when I clicked on Uninstall Program, nothing happened.
I then went to the Devices and Printers page, and the P1006 was greyed out, and nothing happened when I tried to remove the device.
The two Run window actions produced nothing as well. I went ahead and restarted the PC, but the restarting went on and on (for almost 10 minutes) so I thought the process was stuck, and I forced a shutdown. When I rebooted, I went to the link you provided to download and install the drivers. The download was successful, but I the installation must not have been, as when I go to the Control Panel/Programs again, the listing for the HP LasetJet P1000 series has the same blank fields mentioned above. Also, when I try to print, nothing happens as well.
Not sure what to do next, but clearly installing Windows 10 was a mistake.

Hello, @hbny
Appreciate your efforts 🙂
I'd suggest you connect the printer using the Windows built-in drivers.
First, open Windows Device Installation Settings and confirm that your computer is set to automatically download driver software.
- Search Windows for Change Device Installation, and then click the Change device installation settings Control Panel setting in the list of results.
- Device Installation Settings window displays.
- Select the Yes option, and then click Save Changes.
- Make sure the printer is turned on and is connected to the PC.
Now, follow the steps listed under step 3 here: http://hp.care/2oSqtTW
Let me know how that goes!
Cheers 🙂
