HP LaserJet 1020 not printing on Mac Air M1 after macOS27 update :Printer software is not compatible

Hi HP Community,

I have an HP LaserJet 1020 connected to my MacBook Air M1 via USB. The printer was working previously, but after updating macOS to version 27, I am unable to print.

The printer is detected by macOS and appears as Idle under Printers & Scanners. However, whenever I try to print a PDF, the job stops in Print Center with the following error:

“The printer software is not compatible with this device.”

Troubleshooting Already Tried

• Removed and re-added the printer in macOS.
• Selected HP LaserJet 1022, version 1.6.1, as the printer software.
• Confirmed that the printer is detected over USB and appears as Idle.
• Retried printing, but the same compatibility error persists.

I also explored alternative driver solutions because the HP LaserJet 1020 is an older printer. I am currently looking for a reliable way to make it work on Apple Silicon with macOS 27.

My Questions

1. Is there an official or compatible driver for the HP LaserJet 1020 on macOS 27 and Apple Silicon?
2. Is the HP LaserJet 1022 driver still compatible with the latest macOS?
3. Is there a recommended workaround to print directly over USB without relying on the incompatible macOS printer queue?
4. Has anyone successfully used the HP LaserJet 1020 with an M1 Mac running macOS 27?

I would appreciate any guidance from HP experts or community members who have encountered and resolved this issue.

1. For that printer Laserjet 1020 there is no driver available for MacOS 27 Golden Gate.

..... but looking for some alternative options...🤔

2. You can try to install the next 3 drivers:
