I forgot the admin password to my printer. How do I go about resetting the printer to factory default settings?

The user manual has been unhelpful as there is no screen/control panel. Everything suggests accessing EWS but I'm unable to select "Reset to Factory Defaults" because I don't know the password.

Hi @PSTech25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is to be locked out of your HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw due to a forgotten admin password, especially when the printer has no physical control panel and relies on the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for management. You're doing the right thing by asking for help, and I’m here to guide you through the steps.

How to Reset Your HP LaserJet Pro 3001dw to Factory Defaults Without Admin Password

Since you can't access the EWS due to the forgotten password, HP recommends the following method:

🔧 Use the HP Smart App (macOS or Windows)

  1. Download and open the HP Smart app on your Mac.
    • HP Smart App for macOS
  2. Add your printer to the app if it’s not already listed.
  3. Click on your printer → Go to Advanced Settings (this opens the EWS).
  4. If prompted for a password and you don’t know it:
    • You won’t be able to reset via EWS.
    • Proceed to the next step.

Perform a Factory Reset via HP Smart Admin Dashboard

If your printer is enrolled in HP+, you can use the HP Smart Admin Dashboard:

🔗 HP Smart Admin Dashboard

  • Sign in with the HP account used during printer setup.
  • Select your printer.
  • Go to Settings > Printer Management > Reset to Factory Defaults.

⚠️ If you didn’t enroll in HP+, this option may not be available.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
