Printer was working fine. Tray 2 (the drawer) started saying out of paper when it is not. Looked at print settings on printer and in control panel . I didn't think I changed any settings and it ended up printing again. Now I'm trying to print from Tray 1 (the bypass) and that is not detecting paper in it so it defaults to tray 2.
I'm trying to accomplish automatic selection from tray 1 IF there is paper in it, then if not, automatically default to tray 2.
When I print checks I put them in tray 1. If there is nothing in tray 1, I want it to automatically default to plain paper in tray 2.

Ended up calling HP support. The tech was very helpful. Ended up uninstalling this printer and removing all old HP printer drivers from prior printers over the years that apparently were conflicting with each other, then reinstalled. Problem solved and it prints much faster.

What size and type settings do you have on tray1?

That is part of the issue. Tray one should be a different paper type. Then when you send plain paper jobs it will automatically go to tray 2. Having tray one as the plain paper as tray 2 is just going to confuse the printer.
