HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw

The many threads referencing this issue have all been locked due to age, but I just came across a solution to upgrading the firmware on this device on Windows.

Download the firmware update, extract it (e.g. 7zip), and find the product-update.acl firmware file. Connect the printer via USB and create a network share for the printer. I imagine there's alternate ways to be able to address the printer, but this is perhaps easiest.

In a command prompt, navigate to the directory with the firmware, and do

copy /b product-update.acl \\computer-name\printer-share-name

This sends the firmware as binary (/b) to the printer as a print job. It should then show as successfully printed in the print queue, and then the HP logo will display on the printer screen. If all goes well, the printer should boot with the new firmware in half a minute or so.

I just went from a firmware from 2014 to the current 20230330 one. I first tried with a network share for the printer via network, but the print job failed. Switching to USB worked perfectly.

Technique works for the M127fw just the same.

Doesn't look like I can tag anyone from the old threads, but hopefully this helps someone in the future. HP web services does actually  appear to be enabled now, although I haven't tested if it works.

Obviously try at your own risk.

edit: It looks like it's possible to directly address the printer like \\.\USB001 or whatever port your printer is on
