HP Recommended

Hello,
I'm experiencing an issue with my HP LaserJet M111a printer. It was printing normally, and then suddenly stopped. The printer is correctly installed, displays a solid green light, and the system also shows it as “Ready.”

It is connected via USB to a Chromebook, which is fully updated with the latest version of ChromeOS.

Here’s what I’ve already tried: Uninstalled and reinstalled the printer / Unplugged and restarted both the printer and the Chromebook / Successfully printed a one-page test directly from the printer

When I send a document to print, the Chromebook sends the job, and the printer appears to receive it—but nothing happens. No paper feeds, no error on the printer.

When checking the system, I see the following message:
“Could not print – Printer inaccessible on Google.”

I’ve also noticed that the HP support page does not provide any driver or firmware options compatible with ChromeOS, so I’m unable to update the printer from there.

Please advise on how I can resolve this issue or update the firmware if needed from a Chromebook.

Thank you,
Hernan Fratto

@HernanFrattp, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer suddenly stops working especially when everything appears to be set up correctly. Let's walk through a few steps to get your HP LaserJet M111a printing again from your Chromebook.

The HP LaserJet M111a is a basic USB-only printer and does not support native ChromeOS printing via the newer IPP-over-USB or Mopria standards. ChromeOS has deprecated support for some legacy USB printing methods, which may explain why it suddenly stopped working after an OS update.

Recommended Steps

Use HP Print for Chrome Extension (if available)

Google deprecated Cloud Print, but some HP printers still work with the HP Print for Chrome extension. However, this is not guaranteed for all models.

  • Check if the extension is installed: HP Print for Chrome - Chrome Web Store
  • If not, try installing it and see if the printer becomes accessible.

Try Printing via Android App (Workaround)

If your Chromebook supports Android apps:

  • Install the HP Smart app from the Play Store. HP Smart
  • Unfortunately, the M111a is not supported by HP Smart directly, but you can try using Mopria Print Service (also available on Play Store).
  • Connect the printer via USB OTG and attempt printing from an Android app like Google Docs or Files.

Use a Different Device to Update Firmware (if available)

Since ChromeOS doesn’t support firmware updates:

  • If you have access to a Windows PC, download the firmware update from the Official HP® Support
  • Install the firmware using USB and retry printing from the Chromebook afterward.

Try Manual Printer Setup on Chromebook

Sometimes manually adding the printer helps:

  • Go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers
  • Click Add Printer
  • If it doesn’t auto-detect, click Add Manually
    • Name: HP LaserJet M111a
    • Protocol: USB
    • Manufacturer: HP
    • Model: Try selecting a similar model like HP LaserJet Pro M15w (if M111a is not listed)

If None of the Above Work

Unfortunately, due to limited ChromeOS support for USB-only printers like the M111a, you may need to:

  • Use the printer with a Windows/macOS device
  • Or consider a Wi-Fi-enabled HP printer that supports native ChromeOS printing (e.g., HP+ models)

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
