HP Laserjet Pro M15a USB (HP Laserjet M14-M17 series)
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

I have a big problem with a brand-new HP Laserjet printer (which is now shared by many other HP users on this message board) with a brand-new HP Laserjet which thinks it is Airprint eve though it is USB-only, and there is no way to change this on Mac. As a result, the printer will not print at all.

The printer states it is 'ready', it shows up in the printer window on the Mac as ready/idle, its drivers are all set up via HP Smart, and it goes through the print dialogue as if everything is normal, but then nothing prints. It won't even print the test page. I'm on MacOS Monterey, Macbook Pro 2017. I've now spent far too many hours with HP Support, and hours resetting the printer drivers, the HP Smart app, restarting the computer, and all the other usual troubleshooting. Nothing changes. Please see attached photos for reference.

Because this is a problem that many of us currently have (HP Laserjet thinking it is Airprint when it is USB-only), with no clear answers to the issue, it's becoming quite clear that this is *not* a problem with our Macs, USB drivers, etc as HP Support keeps telling us, but instead a manufacturer issue - something related to HP software/hardware and how it works on Mac.

HP Support - please help! I currently have a completely useless, and brand-new, printer that I have never been able to print from. I can also not speak to HP Support on the phone, because I bought the printer in Germany, and I only speak English. So would really appreciate some help here for me and the other users who are suffering due to this ongoing HP error.

Hi @kit00,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to print from your USB printer.

Try the below suggestions -

  1. Uninstall HP Smart -
  2. Try updating mac/ios and printer firmware
  3. Install HP Smart from the APP store

1.     If installed from HP.com please delete from /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/HP Smart. Then delete HP Smart from the Applications folder and reinstall from the Mac App Store.

2.    If downloaded from the Mac App Store please remove /Users/Username/Library/Containers/HP Smart/containers.plist and then launch HP Smart from the Applications folder and go through the setup again.

  1. Try updating mac and printer firmware

To update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
To update Mac, try these steps - How to update the software on your Mac

Set up a USB printer connection with a built-in driver (Mac)

When you connect the printer USB cable, macOS automatically installs and adds your printer to provide basic printing functionality.

  1. Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Software Update. Install any available updates, and then restart your Mac.

  2. Make sure there is an open USB port available directly on your computer. If you use a USB hub or docking station, the printer might not receive enough power to operate properly.

  3. Click the Apple icon , click System Preferences, and then click Printers & Scanners, Print and Scan, or Print and Fax.

  4. If your printer displays in the list, select it, and then click the Minus sign to remove the printer.

  5. Connect the printer USB cable to the computer.

  6. If prompted to download new software, follow the instructions to install it.

  7. Confirm your printer is listed under Printers.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

None of the suggestions you made have helped. I have done every one of the actions, and the issue remains.

The printer still thinks it is Airprint when it is USB-only. Removing it and readding the driver through Printers and Scanners on Mac does not solve the problem. Every time, it shows back up as an Airprint printer, which it is not.

I have also now tested the printer on a much older Mac, and it works fine. So this seems to be an HP driver problem shared by users with Macbook Pros (2017 and newer) running on the newest Mac operating system.

Please refer to my photos above, and the other similar posts I have listed, for further reference.

We have tried all the troubleshooting steps from our end, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.

Please reach out to HP Support in your region for further assistance.

Hope this helps!
