Microsoft Windows 11

We have checked all default settings, both on the printer/GUI, and on local machines.

I've even tried defaulting machines to tray 2 and changing tray priority.

I've pulled out tray 1 to make sure the sensor seems be recognizing it as closed.

Checked paper types and even made tray 1 not available on an endpoint. Still got the same behavior.

I've checked all paper guides.

This occurs on Win11 and Win10, OS doesn't matter.

Driver reset doesn't fix the problem.

Hard restart doesn't fix the problem.

Resetting to default doesn't fix the problem.

The printer still wants the use tray 1 on each and every print job regardless of application or endpoint. There is no paper in tray 1 and it is not open. As you can see, we've hit pretty much EVERY basic troubleshooting step. Is this some kind of bug? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi @badamspeco

If you've already performed a range of troubleshooting steps to resolve issues with tray selection or behavior on your HP printer, and the problem persists regardless of operating system or driver resets, here are a few more advanced troubleshooting steps you can consider:

Advanced Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Firmware Update:

    • Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  2. Check for Physical Obstructions:

    • Even if tray sensors and paper guides appear functional, ensure there are no small obstructions or debris that might interfere with tray detection.
  3. Printer Reset:

    • Try a complete printer reset. This involves turning off the printer, unplugging it from the power source for about 10-15 minutes, and then powering it back on.
  4. Driver Reinstallation:

    • Completely uninstall the printer driver from your computer.
    • Restart your computer and reinstall the printer driver, preferably using the latest available version from the HP website.
  5. Network Configuration:

    • If the printer is networked, ensure that there are no network communication issues, as they could influence the printer settings retrieval.
    • You might also consider setting a static IP for the printer to avoid any IP conflicts.
  6. Printer Defaults on the Server (if applicable):

    • If the printer is shared on a network, check the defaults set on the print server. The server settings can override local settings on the clients.

These steps should help resolve the recurring issues with the printer’s tray operations.
