@WHshafer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 8020 series printer is not printing in color despite having full and properly installed cartridges, try the following troubleshooting steps.

Check Printer Settings

  • On your computer, open the Print settings before printing.
  • Ensure "Print in Grayscale" is unchecked.
  • Set Color Mode to "Color" instead of black and white.

Run a Printhead Cleaning

  • On the printer's touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and try printing again.

Check Ink Levels and Cartridges

  • On the printer screen, go to Ink Levels and confirm all colors are detected.
  • Remove and reinsert the color cartridges, ensuring they are correctly installed.
  • If using refilled or third-party cartridges, try using genuine HP ink.

Update Printer Firmware & Drivers

  • Go to HP Support and check for the latest firmware updates for your printer.
  • If printing from a computer, update the HP Smart app and printer drivers.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and try printing again.

Test a Color Print

  • Print a Print Quality Diagnostic Page:
    • On the printer's touchscreen, go to Settings > Reports > Print Quality Report.
    • If color is missing or faded, it could indicate clogged printheads.

Check Printer Preferences (Windows)

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your HP OfficeJet 8020 and select Printing Preferences.
  • Ensure "Color" is selected instead of "Black & White" or "Grayscale."

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
