I have a new HP  laptop Intel Core Ultra 7 and my current printer HP Officejet Pro 8710 will not print or scan.  I have done everything I could think of including uninstalling it and reinstalling it and using HP Smart. I got it to scan one time. Later, I went to print and it says I can only send a fax and I'm not set up for fax.

Hi @sunnyinside,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

It sounds like your new Intel Core Ultra 7 laptop has automatically assigned a "Fax" driver or a basic Windows IPP driver to your OfficeJet Pro 8710, which often disables the actual printing and scanning functions. Since these newer processors and Windows versions prioritize modern "universal" drivers, the full communication link between your PC and the 8710 hardware needs to be manually re-established.

Remove the existing Fax and IPP printer entries

  • Open Settings on your laptop, go to Bluetooth & devices, and select Printers & scanners.
  • Click on any entry labeled HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 (Fax) or HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 (Network) and select Remove.
  • Restart your laptop to clear the temporary print spooler data associated with those incorrect drivers.

Install the Full-Feature Software Suite

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver (the "Full Software Solution," not just the HP Smart app).
  • Run the downloaded .exe file and follow the on-screen prompts until you reach the Connection Type screen.
  • Select Wireless or Ethernet (whichever you use) and allow the installer to find the printer on your network to create a dedicated "Print" port.

Set the 8710 as your Default Printer

  • Return to the Printers & scanners menu in Windows Settings.
  • Click on the newly installed HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 (which should no longer say "Fax").
  • Click the Set as default button at the top of the screen to ensure your documents stop defaulting to the Fax utility.

Does the printer show up as "Idle" or "Offline" in the Printers & Scanners menu after you finished the reinstallation?

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,
