I would like to set the printer driver so that it automatically selects the proper paper try based on the size of the paper chosen in the app I'm printing from.
I can't see any way to get that to stay, and currently I can't see how to edit any of the presets and save them even the ones I've added.
Thanks for any help anybody can offer.

Hi @dhbailey,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To set automatic tray selection as the default on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e printer, you'll need to adjust the printing preferences in the printer driver settings. Here's how you can do it:
Step 1: Access Printer Preferences
- Open Printer Properties:
- Open the document or image you want to print.
- Select "Print" from the application's menu (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat).
- When the print dialog box appears, find and select "Printer Properties" or "Printer Preferences." This option is usually located below or beside the printer selection dropdown menu.
Step 2: Set Automatic Tray Selection
- Find Paper Handling Options:
- Look for a tab or section labeled "Paper" or "Paper/Quality."
- Select Automatic Tray Selection:
- Within the Paper Handling options, look for a setting related to tray selection.
- If there is an option for "Automatic Tray Selection" or "Auto Select," enable it. This setting allows the printer to automatically choose the appropriate tray based on the paper size selected in the printing application.
- Save Changes:
- Once you've selected Automatic Tray Selection, make sure to save your changes. There may be a "Save" or "Apply" button at the bottom of the settings window. Click on it to save your preferences.
Step 3: Edit and Save Presets (Optional)
- Create a New Preset:
- If you want to create custom presets for different paper sizes or types, look for an option to create a new preset or edit existing ones.
- Name your preset and configure the settings according to your preferences, including Automatic Tray Selection.
- Save the Preset:
- After configuring the settings, look for a "Save" or "Apply" button to save your new preset.
Step 4: Test Printing
- Print a Test Page:
- Once you've configured the settings and saved your changes, print a test page to ensure that the automatic tray selection is working correctly.
- Verify Paper Tray Selection:
- Check that the printer is selecting the appropriate tray based on the paper size selected in the printing application.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I appreciate that detailed explanation. I followed the explanation very easily. That was what I have already tried, so it's good to know that I've got the right idea. However I can not save things. The "save" icon in the Printer Properties dialog is greyed out. When I first installed the software I was able to create two new printer preferences and save them, but for some reason these days I can't save anything now. And I can't edit any of the existing presets either. Is there some setting I've messed up?

It would be nice if HP products actually worked! So far it seems like all the "new" improved garbage is a royal PITA to ever get it to work, if it ever does. Your suggestions were worthless for the brand new 9730e printer I am needing to print from tray 2 for envelopes! Keeps saying paper mismatch for tray 1 and NEVER prints from tray2 for anything!
What a useless expensive paper weight this thing has turned out to be!
