HP Office Jet Pro 9730e
I have set everything up everywhere I can to have this printer auto select the paper size from the 2 trays, tray 1 is 8.5x11 and tray 2 is 11x17 when printing but it is only printing 11x17 at this moment. I did once somehow get it to auto select the different sizes but it was opposite of what was sent to print meaning the 11x17 picture was printing on 8.5x11 paper and the 8.5 x 11 picture was printing on 11x17 paper. I can't even get it to do that at the moment. If I can't get this printer to auto select and print on both sizes correctly during a big print job I wont be able to use this printer for what I bought it for. Has anyone had this happen? I just bought and set this up so maybe it isnt set up right. It is on an ethernet connection but have same issue on wi-fi

Welcome to the HP English Community --
The printer can do a lot - hopefully, it can do what you need.
The Printer can be set to certain Default Print Options
Examples - EWS - Tray and Paper / Print Defaults
EWS_9135_Tray_and_Paper_3
EWS_9135_Print_Default_Print_Options_3
What else?
Much of what you are doing is controlled by the application or software you are using.
==============================================================
The following assumes you have installed the full driver printer software / Full Feature Software.
Reference
Details Page - Driver - For your Printer
>>> Full Feature Software - Web Pack Installation Package - Information - Download / Save / (then) Install <<<
HP OfficeJet Pro 9730 Series EasyStart Printer Setup Software - Offline Use Only
If / When asked, opt for the Full Driver / Full Software to be installed.
If using a printer USB cable, connect the cable when asked to do so, near the end of the installation process.
After the software is installed, Restart the computer and sign in.

NOTE
With the exception of the visual presentation of print dialogs Windows 11 and / or for this new printer model, nothing in this section is new --
If the content makes little sense, ask for additional examples or simply ignore what is not relevant.
Some apps and software are better at anticipating, reading, presetting the Source (Tray) settings than others.
First and foremost, as with printer software for other printer models set Printing Preferences for the various job types.
While not every setting can be adjusted as saved, many settings can be made "Preferred".

-----------------------------------------
HP Smart (on its own) cannot store Presets / Custom Shortcuts from one job to the next.
Each job opens as defined in the default for either Document or Photo / Image.
Teamed up with HP Smart Printing, HP Smart is able to understand the concept of creating and calling Presets / Custom Shortcuts.
NOTE: HP Smart Printing works with apps and software other than just HP Smart.
HP Smart Printing and Printing Preferences
HP Smart Printing understands Printing Preferences, that is, a preconfigured set of rules for job setup.
For example, create a HP Smart Printing > Printing Preferences configuration for "Everyday General Printing".
HP_Smart_Printing_Printing_Preferences_Dialog_2
HP Smart Printing can be used to create Presets / Custom print job configurations.
Additionally, HP Smart Printing prevents conflicts by only allowing settings that are able to work together.
For example, Smart Printing prevents Borderless printing on paper sizes and types where the Borderless option is not supported by the printer.

I have tried every driver, it still will not auto select. Im using Adobe and when I pick another printer(Xerox) to print it will print from Adobe just fine. If I select the HP9730e to do the printing everything prints on tabloid sized paper even though in the device settings I have each tray paper sizes selected appropriately. It is still not auto selecting the right tray. Do you think there is a problem with the printer itself? Should I get a replacement while I am still within the return window?

I think I am, after all, the wrong Expert to answer this question -
I am not sure how you set this printer to auto-select and auto-switch the paper on a previous job / setup.
" I did once somehow get it to auto select the different sizes but it was opposite of what was sent to print meaning the 11x17 picture was printing on 8.5x11 paper and the 8.5 x 11 picture was printing on 11x17 paper. I can't even get it to do that at the moment. "
The paper defaults can be set per tray (as previously shown).
Of that, I am sure in the sense that I have a similar model 9135e -- the paper setup is similar.
What?
Perhaps I do not understand the printer specifications that appear to indicate that auto paper sensing and paper switching is not supported.
Automatic Paper Sensor | No |
So - If the specifications are correct (they must be so),
The printer might not support the feature.
In that case, returning the printer for the same model would not make a difference.
What to do?
If you purchased the printer from the HP Store,
Contact the Store Customer Service Department -
Ask about the auto paper sensor feature
If you do not get the answer you require,
Return the printer for a model / brand that does what you expect and need.

OR
Print using Page Range -
First job, print the pages for the one size paper
Second job, print the pages that need the other paper
True - it's a messy work around.

I thought I would drag and drop the print to HP Smart and it is not setting up the pages correctly either. Can you explain why everything is saying this should be printing on an 8.5x11 paper but is actually printing on 11x17?
07-16-2024 09:03 AM
Added to the above post....This was dropped in along with a print that is actually on 11x17. If I go to settings and select the tray with the correct paper size, the other print defaults to that size, so when I print, one comes out correctly the other is on the wrong size paper.
