Hello,
I've got a "HP OfficeJet 6950" Printer.
Using the HP Smart Scanning feature is working, but due to the limits of that app I would like to use other tools to interact with the printer for scanning.
The "normal" Windows Scan App is failing to interact with the printer (It recognizes the printer itself, but fails to get metadata?).
Same goes for a multitude of other tools.
Neither (Hard)-Restarting the Printer nor my PC, upgrading the Driver or Firmware on the printer seemed to fix the issue.
Using the WAI Software API is failing also:
* Exception occured: The WIA device is not online.
* NAPS2.Scan.Exceptions.DeviceOfflineException: 'The selected scanner is offline.'
How can I fix this issue?

Hi @uuk_ ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’re having trouble with your HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Printer’s scanning functionality when using tools other than the HP Smart app.
Here’s a comprehensive set of troubleshooting steps you can follow:
Check Printer Connection:
- Ensure your printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
- If using a network connection, make sure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your printer model. Make sure to select the drivers for Windows 11.
- Install the drivers and restart your computer.
Check Windows Scan App Settings:
- Open the Windows Scan app, go to settings, and ensure the correct scanner is selected.
- If the scanner is recognized but not working, try removing and re-adding the printer in the app.
Verify WIA Service:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service, and ensure it is running. If it’s not running, right-click and select "Start."
Reset the Scanner:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on, then try scanning again.
Reinstall the Printer:
- Remove the printer from your PC: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Remove device.
- Reinstall the printer using the latest drivers from HP’s website.
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Visit the HP Support website to see if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Follow the instructions to update the firmware.
Try a Different Scanning Application:
- If the Windows Scan app and other tools aren’t working, try using alternative scanning software like NAPS2, VueScan, or ScanGear.
Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings:
- Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can block communication with the scanner. Ensure that your security software is not blocking the scanner’s access.
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support website. This tool can automatically detect and fix scanning issues.
Refer to this document: HP OfficeJet 6950 All-in-One Printer series User manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
