HP Officejet Pro 7720
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since a recent Windows 10 update I have been unable to print to my HP OfficeJet Pro 7720.

Every time I try to print a file (.pdf, .jpg, etc) on the display of the printer I read "printing in progress" but it never prints (I wait for one hour or more). Then I have to delete the print pressing the "x" icon on the display. The same thing if I try to make a copy. The only thing that works is the scanner so this is clearly an issue with the printing side of things.

I have tried multiple attempts to resolve this issue, including:

  • Deleting and reconnecting to the printer using the Windows Settings/Devices facility
  • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling all HP apps using the Windows Settings/Apps facility
  • Reinstalling the Printer Driver from the HP Website
  • Running the HP Print & Scan Doctor tool - no faults idenitified
  • Running the windows error tool - no faults idenitified
  • Clearing and restarting the Printer Spooler using Command Prompt (Administrator) cmd/net stop spooler & cmd/net start spooler and using the Windows Services App

I am able to 'see' the printer, ink-levels and all the other status/settings using the HP Printer App  but I cannot print - even trying the 'Print Test Page' facility.  The Printer is not in 'Use Offline' mode.

The only thing I can print is "a Network Configuration Report" directly from the printer.

Please help me

I tried printing both using the USB cable and using Wi-Fi but the printer seems to be stucked at "printing in process". I tried also to print from the smartphone using wifi connection but the same thing happened.

I tried also to installa the printer with the Windows built-in drivers but the situation didn't change.

Hi @William_barbott,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 is not printing even though it appears online, and the scanner works fine. Let’s go through a few steps to identify what could be causing this.

1. Check Printer Status

On the printer display, make sure no errors or alerts are present (like paper jam, low ink, or carriage stuck).

Press the Cancel/Stop button to clear any stuck jobs before testing again.

2. Restart Printer and PC

Turn off the printer and unplug it from power for 30 seconds.

Restart your computer.

Power the printer back on and try printing a test page.

3. Reset the Printer

On the printer, press Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore → Restore Factory Defaults.

This clears any settings that may be causing print jobs to hang.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi or USB and test printing again.

4. Check Print Spooler & Services

Press Windows + R → type services.msc → Enter.

Find Print Spooler → right-click → Restart.

Ensure Startup Type is set to Automatic.

Clear any stuck print jobs by navigating to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and deleting all files.

5. Reinstall Drivers Completely

Uninstall all HP software and drivers via Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall HP Software.

Reboot the PC.

Install the full feature HP driver from the HP Official Website for OfficeJet Pro 7720.

Avoid using Windows built-in drivers for testing until this is verified.

6. Test on Another Device

Try printing from a different PC or smartphone using the HP Smart app.

If the same issue occurs, this indicates a printer-side problem, not the computer.

I hope this helps.
