HP OfficeJet Pro 7740

Help! Our office got this new printer, HP Officejet Pro 7740. I have Windows 10. It installed and worked fine UNTIL a recent Windows 10 update. Then lost the connection to printer, it said "Driver Unavailable". Reinstalled the printer 3 times, and it still said "driver unavailable". Then found a Printer Troubleshooter on my Windows computer settings, and by adding the WPS pin it connected up. And did a test page just fine. But - still no joy, as whenever I try to print something the printer says "Error". Now it says " printer is in Error state". Need to handle this fast! Also as a note this is a wifi network connection and the owner of the printer and the other staff are on Macs, in case that makes a difference.  And THEY are having no problems at all printing stuff. Though the owner said this printed is compatible on both Mac and Windows. Please advise...office work has ground to a halt! Thanks!

Hi,
Please follow the steps below to resolve such an error:

**Be aware that if you have other printers installed on your PC, those will need to be reinstalled too once completing these steps.

1. Uninstall the HP Software from your PC.
2. Backup your registry prior making any registry changes:
     https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03485724
3. Update your registry using the Reg file below (that will change some printer related policies for your PC):
     https://www.dropbox.com/s/avbv56zdgwv7600/kernel.reg?dl=1
4. Right click the Start menu and select Run.
     Type Services.msc and press OK.
Locate and stop the Print Spooler service
5. Browse to c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers.
     Rename W32X86 to W32x86.old
     Rename x64 to x64.old
Note: if any of these folders fail to rename reboot your PC and then Continue following the steps starting from Step 4...
6. Restart your computer.
7. Reinstall the HP Software and check for any difference

Please let me know the results,
Shlomi

Hi Schlomi, Thanks so much for your prompt and detailed answer. I am sure this will help any who have a similar problem. On my own application of this...I got bogged down on the first step, to uninstall the HP printer.  Could not figure out how to do that. None of the tutorials or forums etc  I searched worked, could not find "Programs and Features" anywhere at all. Also no Cortana or Windows Search option  as the tutorials suggest...finally ran out of time and gave up. I'm not a techie, just an office manager. However,  while blindly stabbing around in the Settings for Printers, I saw that the 7740 Printer had a box saying "Open App" so I did. This popped up a window to print and actually did print docs off my computer, though it gives no choices or options for any print settings such as size, etc.  Looks like it is printing from an App rather than direct from the computer. So I had to go with that, for now.   Again I want to note that my printing was all fine until the last Windows 10 update, which was where all the trouble began. Hope this helps other readers and any HP programmers that can look into that. Thanks again. - Jessica24

Provost,

I tried your seven steps with no problems but still not joy.

I've got two computers using Windows 10 connected to a 7740 printer.

The desktop prints a given word document fine.

The laptop sends it to the spooler where it disappears.

I started deleteing things from the one page documet and found that it didn't like the font 'Calisto MT'  If I changed that font, it printed fine.

Is there a good way to id the version of the spooler?  That seems to be the problem.

Any other ideas?

thanks!

Note:  Trying to solve the problem where print jobs drop out of the print queue and don't print.
