The Instant Ink shipment is stalled -- No tracking number available

Hi HP Community,

I recently picked up an HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e printer from a local Goodwill store. After performing a semi-full reset to fix a software glitch, the printer is now online and visible in HP Smart—but it’s stuck in setup mode.

The display reads: “Insert cartridges that came with the printer. When finished, close the cartridge access door to continue.”

Unfortunately, the original setup cartridges were not included with the printer. I’m enrolled in HP Instant Ink, and the portal shows that cartridges are scheduled for shipment—but they haven’t shipped yet because the printer is “offline” (unable to report ink levels).

Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Semi-full reset (successful, but didn’t bypass setup lock)

  • Restored printer backup

  • Verified Wi-Fi connection and HP Smart online status

I understand that setup cartridges are required to complete the initial configuration, and that Instant Ink cartridges won’t work until setup is complete.

My questions:

  1. Can HP provide replacement setup cartridges for this printer?

  2. Is there any way to bypass the setup lock if the printer is online and registered?

  3. Has anyone else resolved this issue after acquiring a secondhand HP printer?

Thanks in advance for any guidance or support!

@DeclanMurphy205, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If the unit was initialized earlier and you're encountering this error after setup, please follow the steps outlined in the guide to resolve the issue.

Refer: HP Printers - A 'Use SETUP Cartridges' Error Displays | HP® Support.

If this is your first time setting up the unit, you can ignore the previous steps.

To bypass the cartridge setup, we’ll need to perform an OOBE reset. However, since these steps are specific to your printer model, I'll send you detailed instructions via private message to ensure we don't risk causing any issues with the printer.

Also, could you please share the serial number of your unit in a private message so I can assist you more effectively?

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
