Tried all of these steps including factory reset, but the problem persists. Frustrating especially because it will randomly restart in the middle of the night, lighting up the room and going through the printhead setup (since it is restarting after failing to update). Happening SEVERAL times a day. It appears I'm not the only one experiencing this error. As others have said, there appears to be NO WAY to manually update the firmware, and the download keeps failing. It seems like a software/driver issue, not a mechanical issue, so there must be a solution to this problem if the right people would see this and provide something USEFUL we can do. I've been a subscriber to Instant Ink for several years now, but if I have to buy a new printer because of this ridiculous problem that they don't want to address, then I'll probably go with an Epson EcoTank.

I did the factory reset and my printer was connected by a cable so I didn't get the same problem. I though connecting it by USB would allow the update to happen from my computer through the HP Support Assistant, but all that did was tell me I had to install all of the printer setup programs again (not for the printer, for my computer). I ran into the issue with the printer saying it can't use the Instant Ink cartridges until I linked it back to my account, and that required enabling the Web Services again, and once I did that, it connected to my account and I was able to print again, but the update is still cycling several times a day, failing each time.

I have had to turn the printer off to prevent this random behavior. I also agree with you, if I have to buy another it will be the Epson, not an HP. Seems a big shame for a printer that is only a few years old or so and very lightly used. Also on instant ink.

Come on HP, do better. Or are you just so big that you don't care about your customers?
