HP OfficeJet Pro 8122e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Printer fails to install Firmware updates. I've tried from the printer, from the web page, from the smart app and from the HP.exe file. Always fails to download, or reports an error message regarding a serious error.

Printer also frequently refuses to print because it has insta ink cartridges installed. Insta ink is fully paid and printer shows as on line with it.

I work in IT so knew HP were not good in a business enviroment, but thought i'd get away with it for home use.

@Simon314, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP printer is failing to install firmware updates and consistently displaying error messages, here is a guide to help you resolve the issue:

General Steps to Resolve Firmware Update Failures

Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect the rechargeable battery, if applicable.
  • Turn off the printer by pressing the power button. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and then reconnect to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Update the Printer Firmware

From the Printer Control Panel:

  • Ensure the printer is connected to a network with an active Internet connection.
  • If the printer uses a USB connection, switch to a network connection temporarily.
  • Access the Product Update or Check for Updates menu via the HP ePrint icon or through Setup, Services, or Settings menus.

Via the HP Smart App:

  • Open the HP Smart app. If not installed, download it from 123.hp.com.
  • After adding the printer, click on the printer image and navigate to Printer Home Page (EWS) or Advanced Settings.
  • Select Tools or Web Services and then click on Printer Updates.

Through HP Customer Support:

Considerations for Message Errors:

  • If the printer is stating messages like "Error b305ddf9," try to perform a reset and attempt the update again.
  • Ensure all print jobs are completed before attempting the firmware update and that no interruption occurs during the process.

Possible Firmware Corruption:

  • In rare cases where firmware corruption is suspected, contact HP Support for personalized assistance to guide you through the recovery process.

Web Updates and FTP Issues:

  • If using FTP or Web-based methods, ensure that network settings and permissions are correctly configured, and check that the correct firmware files are being downloaded.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
