Brand new HP 8135e. Cartridge Problem error on setup. "(Y) cartridge not communicating correctly with the printer". I've tried to follow the steps suggested by HP Support Agent over and over, but keep getting the "error" message. Please let me know how I can bypass this stage in the set-up.

@JCLIC04, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query.

It sounds like you're getting stuck on the setup process, especially with that "cartridge not communicating correctly" error. Just to clarify, is this your first time setting up the printer, and were you using the setup cartridges provided with the printer, or did the error pop up when trying to use a different cartridge?

That could help pinpoint where things are going wrong.

Take care and have a good day.

This is a new 8135e Printer. I attempted to install it using the cartridges that came with it. I keep getting a "cartridge not communicating well" error message, and the setup won't proceed to the next stage. Please let me know how I can get by this stage. Thanks.

Hi @JCLIC04,

@Garp_senchau is away at the moment and I'll be assisting you further.

Thank you for getting back to us and clarifying that you’re using the setup cartridges provided with your brand-new HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e.

I understand how frustrating it is to be stuck at the very first step of setting up a new printer. The “(Y) cartridge not communicating correctly with the printer” error usually points to either a cartridge recognition issue or, less commonly, a hardware fault in the printer’s cartridge access area.

Let’s go step by step:

1. Check the Basics

Make sure you are using the setup cartridges that came with the printer (look for the word SETUP on the label).

Power the printer off and disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet for about 60 seconds.

Reconnect the cable and power the printer back on.

2. Reseat the Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door.

Gently press the Yellow (Y) cartridge to release it and remove it.

Inspect the electrical contacts on the cartridge and in the printer for protective tape, debris, or visible damage.
(Make sure all orange plastic covers and pull-tabs are removed.)

Wipe the cartridge contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water — do not touch the nozzles.

Let it dry for a few seconds, then firmly reinstall it until it clicks into place.

3. Try a Different Cartridge (if available)

If possible, insert another genuine HP Yellow cartridge to see if the error persists.

If the error clears with a different cartridge, the original Yellow cartridge is faulty.

4. Perform a Printer Reset

With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.

Wait 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips) and reconnect it to the printer.

Turn the printer back on and retry the setup.

I hope this helps.
