Hello, I’m hoping to get some guidance on a persistent issue with my HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series.

The printer receives jobs from my Mac, shows Printing… on the display, but never actually prints. Test/configuration/diagnostic pages launched directly from the control panel print without any problem.

Steps I’ve already tried:

  • Tested multiple file types (PDF, Word, PNG, plain text).
  • Tested from multiple Macs.
  • Tested over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and direct USB connection.
  • Restarted printer, router, and computers.
  • Deleted/re-added printer queues on macOS.
  • Full factory reset of the printer.
  • Set manual DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4).
  • Checked for firmware updates (none available).

At this stage, even USB printing fails in the same way, so I suspect a formatter board or firmware corruption issue. Before I escalate to HP support or replace the printer, does anyone know if there’s a firmware recovery/reflash tool or a deeper reset procedure that might solve this?

Thank you for any advice.

Hi @PapiMcPoyle,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 prints internal test pages fine but is stuck on “Printing…” for any jobs sent from a Mac, and standard troubleshooting steps haven’t resolved the issue. Let’s go through some steps to address possible deeper firmware or system issues.

Check Print Queue on Mac

Open System Settings → Printers & Scanners.

Select the OfficeJet 9010 → Open Print Queue.

Cancel any pending jobs and restart the Mac.

Sometimes stale jobs can block new ones even after deleting the printer.

Reinstall Printer Using HP Smart App

Download the HP Smart app for macOS.

Use it to add the printer, rather than relying on macOS built-in drivers.

HP Smart can handle driver/communication updates that the standard macOS queue sometimes misses.

Check for IP / Network Conflicts

If using Ethernet or Wi-Fi, ensure the printer has a static IP to avoid changing addresses.

Print a Network Configuration Page from the control panel to verify IP.

Ensure no duplicate IP exists on the network.

USB Direct Printing Test

Connect the printer via USB directly to one Mac.

Try printing a simple document via HP Smart.

If it still fails, this suggests the issue is internal to the printer (formatter board, firmware corruption, or internal queue).

Test With Another Device

Try a Windows PC with the HP Smart / full driver package to see if the issue is macOS-specific or universal.

If Windows jobs print, the problem may be driver/communication related rather than hardware.

I hope this helps.
