HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer

I am trying to set up my new HP office jet pro 9730e printer but receive an error " New Cartridges Required - New, unused cartridges must be used to start up the printhead.  Replace the indicated cartridges to complete startup."  I am using the set up cartridges out of the box but they are not working.  I can't proceed with the setup process. I have heard about the *#** but there is no access to the menu due to it only displaying this error message and will not respond to anything on the touchscreen.

Hi @SlopeSparky,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out regarding your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e printer setup issue. We understand how frustrating it can be when you're unable to proceed due to the "New Cartridges Required" error. Let’s walk through the recommended steps to resolve this.

1. Ensure You Are Using the Correct Setup Cartridges:

  • Double-check the cartridges you're using. Setup cartridges are labeled "SETUP" and are specifically designed for first-time initialization.
  • If you're using standard or replacement cartridges, the printer will not proceed with setup.

2. Inspect the Cartridges:

  • Remove each cartridge and inspect for:
  • Protective plastic tape — make sure it is fully removed.
  • Dirty or damaged electrical contacts — gently clean with a lint-free cloth.
  • No visible damage or leaks.

3. Perform a Full Power Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes to allow the printer to fully reset.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
  • Reinstall the setup cartridges when prompted.

4. Check for Blockages in the Printhead:

  • Open the printer and inspect the printhead slot.
  • Ensure no packaging material or debris is blocking the sensors.

5. Try a Different Power Outlet:

  • Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or power strip.

6. Factory Reset (If Accessible):

  • If the touchscreen remains unresponsive, this option may not work, but if it becomes accessible:
  • On the Home Screen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
