HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

When I try to print (e-mail, microsoft office, etc.), I get the error "attention required".  Have tried using HP Smart, HP Print & Scan Doctor, and Windows Troubleshooter but they've provided no details/fix.  Updated Windows 11 to last version 24H2.  Tried un-installing and re-installing printer and rebooting it.  My wireless connection seems to be set up ok.  Only issue with the printer is that I only have a black-and-white cartridge installed, not a color cartridge; this was not a problem in the past, but perhaps is now that I have a new laptop and wireless connection??

Hi @DaleFran,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding error message on your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The "Attention Required" message on your HP Officejet 4630 is often related to a software or connection issue, especially after changing devices or updating Windows. Since you've already tried troubleshooting tools, let's go through a few more potential fixes:

Check if the Printer is Set to "Use Printer Offline"

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
Right-click your HP Officejet 4630 and select See what's printing.
Click Printer in the menu and ensure "Use Printer Offline" is unchecked.
If it's checked, click to disable it and try printing again.

Check the Default Printer

Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
Ensure HP Officejet 4630 is set as the default printer.
If not, click on the printer and select Set as default.

Try a Hard Reset

Tun off the printer and unplug it from power for 2 minutes.
While unplugged, restart your laptop.
Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Try printing again.

Check for Missing Color Cartridge Setting

Since you're using only a black cartridge, the printer may be stuck looking for a color cartridge. Try forcing it to print in grayscale mode

Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
Right-click on your HP Officejet 4630 and choose Printing Preferences.
Go to the Paper/Quality tab.
Look for Grayscale or Black Ink Only mode and select it.
Click Apply > OK.

Run the HP Print Queue Reset

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and type: net stop spooler del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\* /Q net start spooler

Press Enter after each command.
This clears any stuck print jobs that might be blocking new ones.

Manually Reinstall the Printer Driver

Since you updated Windows, the old drivers might not be fully compatible.
Uninstall the printer:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click HP Officejet 4630 and choose Remove device.
Reinstall the latest driver from HP:
  • Download the latest full feature driver from HP's support site.
  • Install and set up the printer again.

Try a USB Connection (If Wireless Fails)

Connect the printer via USB instead of Wi-Fi.
If printing works via USB, then the issue is with the network settings.
You may need to reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi via HP Smart or the printer’s control panel.

Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

If nothing works, try resetting the printer to default settings:

Press the Wireless + Cancel buttons together for 10 seconds.
The printer will reset its network settings.
Reconnect it to Wi-Fi and try printing again.
