Officejet 6500A
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Trying to connect an Officejet 6500A to a laptop with Windows 10, I've not found a CD I must have purchased, any more. I've downloaded a software package offered on https://support.hp.com/us-en/printer-setup/hp-officejet-6500-all-in-one-printer-series-e709/3795309 . Just like also with a package from[content removed] the setup has worked until I've selected a USB connection. After this, I was asked to connect my printer to my computer. I think I have shortly disconnected the two devices because I in a YouTube video have heard that I should only connect them when prompted, during the installation. Anyhow, I've (re)connected them, and then I could not continue, any more. I think I only was offered the options "Back" or "Cancel", plus the one to connect my printer later. Whatever I've done, I've ended up with such a window about five to ten times, typically after having painstakingly uninstalled any older (partially identical) versions of a software for my printer, or at least for very similar devices (which I'm not certain about).

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Let me know if this helps.

I wasn't able to carry out

"10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows".

Such buttons and windows I have not seen. My computer also has restarted earlier than suggested under 15). I have restarted it another time, in the end, and now hardly can believe that I have successfully connected my ten-year-old Officejet with my four-year-old ASUS laptop. An HP Printer Assistant that has appeared with / under a desktop icon looks a little empty, displaying "string not found", but I can scan, and that is all I want.

I wonder if it may also have contributed that I have this time saved the software in an automatically generated Downloads folder of my Windows File Explorer. Before, I had saved it in a fancy folder under Documents.

That wouldn't make a difference.

Do get back to us in the future for further assistance.

Have a nice day and stay safe!:)
