HP Officejet 7740 Pro
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

1. I'm currently trying to help a user connect to the 7740 printer via a wireless dongle. The user has connected to the same printer before, but when I've checked the printer list it has the serial of the printer as the name with 'Driver is unavailable'  just below it.

2. I've completely uninstalled the software (full feature) and re-installed via the HP website. The printer is getting picked up on the available network list, but when attempting to finalise the connection it is stuck on 'Installing printer' for about 15 minutes, then comes up saying the connection cannot be established.

3. I then uninstalled the printer drivers again using an uninstall tool (to get rid of every trace of the program) then re-installed but to the same conclusion.

4. I then used the HP Scan and Print doctor to see if this picks the printer up. It does pick up then asks for the software to be installed (even though I installed it previously) - however, when I select the printer on the available networks list during this installation, the installation goes straight through but takes me back to step 1 in which the driver appears in the printer list but with 'Driver is unavailable' below it. I then went back into the Scan and Print doctor and the 7740 now appears twice, with the installed software and the same option to install it again.

The user has confirmed that the printer is working for other users who are connected to the same network, so I'm under the impression that there is something wrong with the software on his laptop.

Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Hi all,

Managed to sort this issue out actually - I'll leave this on just incase anyone was having the same issue.

So after uninstalling, the driver and package was still active.

  1. Run printui.exe /s
  2. Go to 'Drivers'
  3. Look for the 7740 driver, select then click 'Remove'
  4. It then asks to remove driver and/or package, I uninstalled both

Once uninstalled - I ran the installation again and the printer picked back up. However I needed to manually set the port as errors were still occuring

  1. Go to 'Printer properties'
  2. Then 'Ports'
  3. Then select 'New port' and setup a TCP/IP Standard port with the IP address of the printer as the port name.
