Trying to get a new HP Envy Desktop running Windows 11 set up.
Just discovered that it will not print a PDF that I opened in Edge.
Tried Excel and Word and all will open a box to send a fax rather than sending anything to printer.
Removed printer and installed recommended driver for my printer from HP site. Restarted.
When I click on Manage Fax Settings in Printer Assistant it cannot connect to the printer.
Printer is connected to Wi-Fi and is recognized by PC. I can print a test page from the HP Printer Assistant.
Also was able to print the PDF from my iPhone.
Seems like the issue is with the Microsoft products.
Had no issues on my old Windows 10 PC.

@stillkicking, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Let’s walk through the likely causes and solutions for your HP Officejet Pro 8600 not printing from Microsoft Word or PDFs in Edge on your new Windows 11 HP Envy desktop.
Root Cause
This is a common issue where Windows mistakenly sets the Fax option as the default printer, or Microsoft apps default to the Fax device instead of the actual printer.
Set the Correct Default Printer
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners
- Click on your HP Officejet Pro 8600
- Click Set as default
If you see “Let Windows manage my default printer” enabled, turn it off to avoid automatic switching.
Remove the Fax Device (Optional)
If you don’t use fax:
- In Printers & scanners, locate the Fax device
- Click it and choose Remove
Check Print Dialog in Word/Edge
When printing:
- In Word or Edge, press Ctrl + P
- In the printer dropdown, manually select “HP Officejet Pro 8600”
- Avoid selecting “Fax” or “Microsoft Print to PDF”
Reinstall HP Full Feature Software (if not already done)
Even if you installed a driver, make sure it’s the Full Feature Software:
- Download from: Official HP® Support
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
This tool can auto-detect and fix many issues:
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
