I have this OfficeJet Pro 8710 AIO printer. It was working okay, then one day it showed "Printhead appears to be missing not detected or incorrectly installed".
I have searched the web on this, mostly giving 3 possible fixes: 1. Reset by unplugging while the printer is on; 2. Update firmware, and finally 3. Replace printhead.
I am just very curious, after doing all of the above, that the error persists, while the ink level of each cartridge is still detected and displayed via HP Smart.
Is there hope for my printer? And no, it is no longer under warranty.

Hi @Darren57,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already. The "Printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed" error can be frustrating, especially when the ink levels are detected correctly. Here are some additional steps you can try.
Check the Printhead and Cartridges
- Reinstall the Printhead: Carefully remove the printhead and reinstall it to ensure it’s seated correctly. Make sure there are no obstructions in the printhead area.
- Check for Damage: Inspect the printhead for any visible damage or debris. Clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and inside the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Clean the Printhead Contacts
- Use a slightly damp cloth to clean the electrical contacts on the printhead. Ensure it’s completely dry before reinstalling.
Check for Firmware Updates
- You mentioned you’ve updated the firmware. Double-check that you’re using the latest version from the HP support site.
Perform a Power Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall. Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on.
Reset the Printer
- Factory Reset:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup.
- Select Printer Maintenance.
- Choose Restore Factory Defaults or Restore Network Defaults.
Try a Different Set of Cartridges
- If possible, try using a different set of cartridges or a new printhead to see if the error persists.
Check for Dust and Debris
- Ensure that there is no dust or debris inside the printer that could be affecting the printhead's ability to connect properly.
Temperature and Environment
- Make sure the printer is in a stable environment (not too humid or hot) as this can sometimes affect printer functionality.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
