To start, I can print automatic duplex on my HP Officejet Pro 9125e with the same computer and software when using Letter (8.5" × 11") paper. I've done a lot of that.

This is the first time I've tried using Statement (5.5" × 8.5") paper. I've loaded the paper, I've changed the paper size in the printer settings, I've told LibreOffice Writer that the page size is 5.5" × 8.5". But when I try to print "double sided, flip on long edge," it prints single-sided, with every other page upside down.

Is this printer's duplexer capable of automatic duplex with Statement size paper?

-- Short Answer --

Sorry, no.

-- Longer Answer --

Statement size paper measures 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches, half the size of standard U.S. Letter paper.

-- FYI -- Suggestion Only --  Read / Ignore --

The following uses standard "Letter" size paper.

Create your document layout at 8.5 X 11 inches (page size).

Switch the orientation if / as wanted...

Add content to just less than 1/2 the page (to accommodate the cut-margin).

Add a page break at the bottom of the page - make room for footer / headers.

Continue on the next page.

Text boxes / Tables can useful for building structures.

Going forward, I'd be interested to know which HP inkjet printers are capable of duplex printing on Statement (5.5" × 8.5") paper.

I think you're suggesting that I can fool the printer by telling it I've loaded Letter (8.5" × 11") paper, even though it's physically Statement size paper? If that's not what you're saying, then sorry, I don't understand your FYI. Or maybe you're suggesting printing on Letter size paper, then cutting it in half?

I've printed a few Statement size pages in two passes, using Odd Only then Even Only. That works, but of course it's more manual, and somewhat error-prone.

Off Hand, I don’t remember whether  / which HP printers auto print Statement in Duplex.

Ask about a model — if the information is public, we can check.

Forget what I said about the letter size document.

Yes, you would have to structure the document to print 1/2 pages, print in duplex, and then cut after printing.

I print a lot of different bits of this and that — using a Paper Cutter is not a “go to” for everyone.

Smiling.

No, in a general sense, it’s impossible to “fool” the printer — they lack enough intelligence to make decisions of this type.  Most printers are limited by what the hardware supports.
