My HP P1005 Laserjet printer appears as the default printer under Printers and prints fine. However, it doesn't appear in Settings / Devices / Printers & Scanners nor under Control Panel / Devices & Printers. I'm using the ltest driver posted on HP's web page.
I tried the Add Printer option in Devices & Printers. The auto scan didn't find the printer. I added it manually which resulted in a second copy of the HP1005 in Printers but not elsewhere. I'm guessing the driver hasn't been updated for a long time and there is an incompatibility with Windows 10 v1809.
Is there a fix?

@sc489, Welcome to HP Support Community!
I would recommend you to uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers.
You can follow the steps below:
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
- Select your HP Printer
- Select Uninstall
- In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
- In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
- Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
- Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
- Click on the “Drivers” tab
- Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
- Select Ok
- Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
- Close Devices and Printers
Download and install the latest printer software from here.
Let me know if this helps.
Cheers 🙂

The P1005 Laserjet still doesn't appear in Devices & Printers having removed and reinstalled the driver. The printer does appear under Printers and works fine. There seems to be an ancomtibility with the latest version of Windows 10.

Let us try disabling the User Account Control(UAC) which should allow complete permissions to install any software or application.
Here's how to turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off in Windows 10:
- Type UAC in the search field on your taskbar. (If the search field isn't visible, right-click the Start button and choose Search.)
- Click Change User Account Control settings in the search results.
- Then do one of the following:
- To turn UAC off, drag the slider down to Never notify and click OK.
- You may be prompted to confirm your selection or enter an administrator password.
- Reboot your computer for the change to take effect.
Also, download and run the Windows update Troubleshooter from here.
When it's done, it's best practice to restart your device. Then check for new updates. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update . Select Check for updates and install any available updates.
You can also run a System File Check (SFC). System file check is a utility built into the Operating System that will check for system file corruption The sfc /scannow command (System File Check) scans the integrity of all protected operating system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions where possible.
- To run a system file check (SFC)
- Go to start>Type CMD
- Right click and run as Administrator
- To verify and repair the OS type sfc /scannow (note the space between sfc and "/")
Restart your PC and see if that helps.
Keep me posted.
