DO NOT CHOOSE AUTOMATIC UPDATES instead choose DO NOT UPDATE.
WARNING: Never run HP's printer update software.
Oh! So it's too late. You clicked on "update software" and now your HP Pagewide Pro MFP477 dw is a brick.
You've tried re-installing your software on the MAC (HP Utility and the software at 123.hp.com/pagewide), but it still does not print. The printer test program still works (Print Quality Diagnostics).
I have a Mac and am running ;ac Sonoma 14.2.1, the latest version. (This version does not seem to be mentioned on HP's site for this printer).
However all the following steps were performed on the printer itself.
Follow these steps:
Disconnect all the cables from the printer including the power cable and then press and hold on the power button for about 15-30 seconds, keep holding down the power button and then connect the power cable and all the other cables back to the printer and power on your printer, the Home and Back buttons will light up.
Release the power button. Touch Home, Back, Home, Home in that order.
A blue screen appears on the control panel, then touch the Menu button in the lower right corner of the screen.
Hit next until "Full reset" appears, then "OK"
"Pagewide Techology logo appears for 20 seconds, then select English and Yes.
Set region. Set Date. Set Time etc.
Select "Self managed" and OK
Load paper in tray 2 and touch "Continue" to initialise. (It will take around 22 mins, but you can continue setting up while it is initialising. But do NOT turn off the printer.
Select your wireless router and enter the password. It will take around 30 secs to connect.
Say "No" to the "Accept HP Webservices uSetup"
Do NOT check the printer auto update
Say "No" to the "Allow HP to collect information.
If you didn't preiously install HP's sofware on your Mac, then visit 123.hp.com/pagewide
Check on the panel how much d time to go. It should say "initialising 80%...81%...." or something like that.
During the next 20 minutes it will keep initialising and printing various test pages for around 25 mins
