Microsoft Windows 11

I recently purchased an HP Pavilion laptop. I use it as a desktop with an external HP keyboard and mouse. I also have an HP LaserJet 1018 printer. The Pavilion laptop recognized the external keyboard and mouse, but it won't recognize the printer. Does this mean I have to buy a new printer, or is there a way of getting the Pavilion laptop to recognize the HP1018 printer? The laptop operating system is Windows 11. Thanks!

Hi @poet59 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion laptop is not recognizing your HP LaserJet 1018 printer, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue before considering purchasing a new printer.

Check USB Connections:

  • Ensure that the USB cable connecting your HP LaserJet 1018 printer to the HP Pavilion laptop is securely plugged in on both ends.
  • Try using a different USB cable or USB port on your laptop to rule out cable or port issues.

Install Drivers:

  • Download and install the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet 1018 printer. Visit the official HP support website, search for your printer model, and download the drivers compatible with Windows 11.
  • After downloading the drivers, follow the on-screen instructions to install them.

Windows Update:

  • Make sure your Windows 11 operating system is up-to-date. Perform Windows Update to ensure that your laptop has the latest updates, including any printer-related updates.

Device Manager:

  • Open the Device Manager on your laptop.
  • Look for any entries related to the HP LaserJet 1018 printer. If you see any errors or warnings, right-click on the printer, and choose to update the driver.

Printer Spooler Service:

  • Open the Services application on your laptop.
  • Locate the "Print Spooler" service, right-click on it, and restart the service.

Try Another Computer:

  • If possible, connect your HP LaserJet 1018 printer to another computer to see if it is recognized. This can help determine if the issue is specific to the laptop or the printer.

Compatibility Mode:

  • Right-click on the printer driver installation file and select "Properties."
  • Go to the Compatibility tab and check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select an earlier version of Windows (e.g., Windows 10).
  • Apply the changes and try installing the driver again.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the official HP website. This tool can automatically diagnose and resolve printing issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
