I recently upgraded to osMac High Sierra 10.13.6 (from Sierra) and although my Photosmart is printing it is not scanning. When I hit the scan icon on my screen toolbar the icon bounces up and down for a while and then stops. Nothing further happens. I can't even force a quit on it without powering down the computer as the iMac will not shut down properly until this application is closed.
I suspect it needs a driver, but the only one available appears not to work when downloaded. I suspect the issue is all about 32 bit apps no longer being supported by the system.
Is this yet another printer to land fill?

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.
I have gone through your Post and I would like to help
May I know how is the printer connected?
Please ensure the MAC OS is up to date. You can refer to this Link: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201541
Also update the Printer Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-photosmart-6510-e-all-in-one-printer-series-b211...
Are you able to make Photocopies?
If the issue persists, we will Remove and Re-Add the printer to the Mac Queue using Airprint
Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window
Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.
If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign
to delete the printer, click the plus sign
, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.
If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.
Figure : AirPrint displays in the Use menu
After adding the Printer, a new item in Previews' File menu called "Import from HP Photosmart 6510 series" will show up . Clicking it will open a new dialog box which controls the scanning process (including settings).
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

In responce to your questions:
1. The iMac is up to date osMac High Sierra v10.13.6
2. The link you have given me to update the HP driver has been looked at before. When I set it for this multipurpose printer it says there are no updates.
I therefore proceeded with reinstalling. As suggested I deleted the Photosmart 6510 and added it back as an air-print device (previously it had been set up on a USB cable as the Air function on the apple didn't work after a previous update).
Current situation is that I can print documents from the iMac, I can copy documents on the printer, but it will not recognise the HP Scan software on the iMac. I get an error message saying "scanner communication cannot be established" The HP Scan app is version 4.0.50 (114)

Problem solved (I think). I discovered a new item in Previews' File menu called "Import from HP Photosmart 6510 series" . Hitting this opens a new dialog box which controls the scanning process (including settings). This software does not appear in the Applications folder so I have no idea where it came from! I can only assume the process of re-installing the printer/scanner made High Sierra download and instal this as an add-on.
Can I now delete the HP Scan v 4.0.50 (114) from the applications folder?

I'm glad you got this issue sorted out 😊
Re-Adding the Printer to the Mac Queue must have added the latest Add-on
You can delete the older HP Scan if it's not required
