My printer isn't showing an option to print in color when I go to print anything. It seems to be black by default and I can't find anywhere to change it. It doesn't  have an option to choose between black or color.  I'm currently using a Mac with macOS Sonoma version 14.1.1. The printer model is a HP Photosmart C4700 on the printer status report and it shows that I have a full supply of color and black ink. However, the printer itself shows HP Photosmart C4750 if that makes a difference.

Hi @Jason225,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Photosmart C4700 is not offering the option to print in color and defaults to black, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue. Follow these steps.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Open the print dialog on your Mac by pressing Command + P when you're in the document you want to print.
  • In the print dialog box, look for a drop-down menu or button that says "Printer" or "Print Using." Make sure your HP Photosmart C4700 is selected as the printer.
  • Check for a "Color" or "Color Options" section in the print dialog. Make sure it is set to print in color.

Printer Driver Update:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer driver installed. Visit the HP support website and download the latest driver for your HP Photosmart C4700 model that is compatible with macOS Sonoma 14.1.1.

System Preferences:

  • Go to "System Preferences" on your Mac.
  • Click on "Printers & Scanners."
  • Select your HP Photosmart C4700 from the list of printers on the left.
  • Click the "Options & Supplies" button.
  • Look for a "Color" or "Color Options" tab and ensure that color printing is selected.

Printer Firmware Update:

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website. Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

Reset Printer Preferences:

  • Open the "System Preferences" on your Mac.
  • Go to "Printers & Scanners."
  • Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer and choose "Reset printing system."
  • Confirm the action and then re-add your printer.

Printer Display Settings:

  • On the printer itself, check if there are any settings related to color printing. Navigate through the menu on the printer's display to see if there's an option to set color as the default.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Jason !

Were you able to fix this ?

I have the same problem with macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 and a brand new HP Smart Tank 7006. No color print option in the Print dialog. Printing from my iPhone works fine.

Take care,

Paul-Henri

I found how to fix this: from the system printing prefs, I removed and then re-added the printer, and it fixed the problem.

I guess something goes wrong when the printer is initially installed by the HP Smart app, because a colleague using the same macOS 14.2.1 and who just installed it from scratch could print in color directly with no problem.
