HP Photosmart d110 inkjet

Computer: MacBook Pro late 2017, 2.9GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, Mac OS Ventura 13.7.4
Printer: HP Photosmart D110 All-In-One inkjet

The Mac found the D110 printer correctly and set it up, but no matter whether I use the HP driver or the Generic PCL driver, the D110 won’t print anything. The percentage calculator starts and then stops at around 13% and then a message pops up stating it’s waiting for the printer to become available. It sees the printer as it read Idle, Default printer, but it just won’t print.

The D110 prints fine from an older HP laptop with Windows 11, but it's being retired as it runs way too slow. What is a solution? As an aside, I can’t find the PostScript driver that HP’s support page also suggested I try.

Hi @adtypeanddesign

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating compatibility issue between your MacBook Pro and the HP Photosmart D110 printer.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

1. Reset the Printer System:

On your MacBook, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click on the printer list and select Reset printing system.

This will clear out all the printers and settings. You can then add the D110 printer again.

2. Install a Compatible Driver:

Since you're having trouble with both the HP and Generic PCL drivers, try downloading and installing the latest driver specifically for your printer from HP's website. Make sure it's compatible with macOS Ventura.

If you can’t find the suggested PostScript driver, you might contact HP support directly for assistance or use HP's online chat/help feature.

3. Use AirPrint:

The HP Photosmart D110 supports AirPrint. If you're connected via Wi-Fi, you can bypass drivers by using AirPrint.

Ensure your MacBook and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network, then add the printer in Printers & Scanners using the AirPrint option.

4. Check for macOS Compatibility:

Ventura updates may have introduced changes that affect older hardware.

Consider checking Apple’s and HP’s compatibility documentation.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Hawks_Eye,
I tried all four well thought-out solutions you presented, but none of them work, unfortunately.
1. I reset the Printer System in the MacBook Pro and the computer recognizes and communicates with the D110. It appears right away when I hit the Add Printer + sign, but it will not print.
2. I am unable to locate a driver for this printer compatible with Ventura from HP’s website. The drivers they have are for older operating systems, ending with 10.12. Ventura is 13.xx.
3. The Air Print idea is a great one, but the D110 doesn’t like my Wi-fi password, even though it was entered correctly.
 4. Similar to #2.
I can call a local computer repair shop and see if they can fix this. Thank you for your time writing out these solutions; I just wish one of them would work. If I could do a remote session with you, I would, but I don’t know if it’s allowed.

Hi @adtypeanddesign

(1) Connect a USB cable between Photosmart printer and computer:

(2) Then try to install the next HP Printer basic driver:

* Click YES   to say thank you,

* Click Accepted Solution when question is answered.

Hi ferRX, sorry, what you suggested didn't help, either.  I didn't understand the R5_1901 part, either, and a Google search didn't bring that up. I'm having the local IT techs come out on Thursday and will report back on what they did to get the Mac to print.

Ok, is a good choice, just wait for the local IT techs to install printer in MacOS.

The best tech our local computer shop sent to me couldn't figure it out either. His fee was higher than what it cost me to buy a new printer. Go figure. Thanks anyway to both of you for your help.
