 May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

Howdy, and thanks for the reply:  All of the choices in your document are hardware.  The product that was giving me a problem was software:

HP Print And Scan Doctor
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Run it and it queries network, USB, etc. connections for any HP print/scan products currently connected in order to diagnose issues.  It doesn't just identify hardware products, it also identifies drivers that present as, say, print devices in the operating system- so virtual printers..   No problem with those, problem with installing the application.  Coughed up a terse error message with little/no info then aborted installation.
Since that post, I have acquired a later version, 5.6.1, and it works fine, so mark this solved.  Thanks.
