LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Print and Scan Doctor says "Failed to communicate with your selected product" even though it finds the printer and shows is online and ready (green checkmark).

I've tried installing the full software and printer driver from

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-LaserJet-Pro-M1212nf-Multifunction-Printer-serie...

but the installer fails silently.  It pops open a box saying Extracting and the progress bar goes from 0% to 100% and then disappears.  That's all she wrote.

How can I get the scanner working?

I forgot to say, I am on Windows 10 (64-bit).

There is nothing wrong with my scanner -- I was able to scan my document from my Linux laptop, using hplip and hp-toolbox to add the printer, and then simple-scan on Ubuntu to scan.

On my Mac (Mojave), I have the printer, but the "Scan" button is missing.

What's going on, why can't Mac and Windows scan but Linux can?
