HP Officejet Pro 9015
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased an OfficeJet Pro 9015 as a replacement for my trusty OfficeJet 6700 which finally gave up the ghost. When I look at the software I had to install, I notice that Printer Assistant has six preset defaults in the Preferences section, that are set to use "A4" paper. I live in Canada, and "A4" is NOT the usual paper size here, or in the USA. We typically use "Letter" size. which has slightly different dimensions from "A4".

The software is "HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series PCL-3" - version 29.117.02.7675

Printer Assistant has these six presets "Locked" so they cannot be permanently altered. One can only select a pre-set shortcut and then temporarily change the paper to "letter". If you change to a different pre-set shortcut, you again have to correct the paper size. If you then go back to the previous shortcut, it has reverted again to "A4" paper. I can create my own user-defined shortcuts, but they get intermixed with the original pre-set ones.

Is there a way to permanently alter the original presets to use my values as defaults. Surely there must be a North American version of this software.

Create custom shortcuts where you want to do so.  I use lots of custom shortcuts - each is marked on the Preferences with a "Start" as opposed to the tiny "Lock" to which you refer.  Yes, the custom shortcuts are added to the list.

If a "locked" preset (shortcut) can be edited in-place (without having to use "Save As" to a new custom shortcut name), the tiny "save" icon will show up right next to the preset (locked shortcut) after you make one or more changes to that preset.

General Example for those reading - "Custom" and locked shortcuts in Preferences

Control how the printer is configured using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Adjust / set Tray and Paper Management to your paper size.

Remember to check / adjust the paper size setting on the printer.

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

Look for a message on the Printer Control Panel,

Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Set the Preferences - Windows

  1. The following assumes the Full Feature Software has been installed.
  2. Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”
  3. Select and adjust settings in each category for the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Set as Default

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

If the printer software supports the feature, change the settings as desired, then use “Save as” to create a Custom Shortcut.

OR

Windows key + S (search for) Printers and Scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage >

Printing Preferences

Select a shortcut and / or set “preferred settings” for paper, source (tray), other settings

Optional (if / as supported on the printer): Save As > enter a name for your custom shortcut

Click OK to save the preferences

Example - EWS - Tray and Paper Management

Note:  If your EWS page does not look like the example, shrink the size (display) of your web page or know that the settings / paths are the same in spite of the visual differences.  As well, the initial EWS window might look slightly different when accessing EWS from within HP Smart.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

Thanks for your reply, @Dragon-Fur.

I know how to add a new shortcut, but why can we not change the existing default factory shortcuts to match our preferences. If I alter the settings for a 'locked' shortcut, it will only stick until I change to a different shortcut, then the first shortcut reverts back to its factory settings using A4 paper. You cannot save It as the default. You can only create a new shortcut, with a different name.. In effect, there would be 6 shortcuts that would never be used as is, as they don't match the paper size in use in Canada.

The printer "Usage Report" keeps track of print and scans by paper size, and most of my output is listed as A4 yet I never use that size.
