HP Printer has a bizarre issue

Hi, I labeled this under Printer Software and Drivers because I couldn't find a category about printers themselves.

I'm beginning to notice something really strange. At night, my printer will wake from sleep and items are being selected on it as if someone is standing there touching it. The weird part? This doesn't happen during the day. It's located in my room so I am near it most of the day. This is extremely unsettling and I don't know what the heck is going on or how to fix it. I've pulled the plug and left it alone for a while.

anyone know what the heck is going on or how to fix it?

@PragmaticBody, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

This is really bizarre indeed. Make sure the printer is connected to a secure network so that no one else can control the printer like on an open network.

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Monitor the printer. If the issue persists, we will have to perform a factory reset on the printer. This will delete all the settings on the printer.

  • I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
