Just wanted to ask a question/vent about HP printers.

I just spent about an hour of my life trying to install one of these things and running into errors every step of the way. We're trying to make our users/service desk install the printers via USB only because

We really don't want to be supporting home networks

Also while on VPN now, print jobs can't be sent to local printers that are connected via network (although it worked with no issue before, but hasn't since an upgrade), but will print to them if they are connected via USB.

Anyways, trying to set up an OfficeJet Pro 9010, but the printer would constantly go into an error state when trying to print a test page to it. I tried:

Installing via Add a Device, both with the OfficeJet Pro 9010 drivers and the HP Universal PCL6 (errored out both times)

Installing via HP app, but this failed because it will only see printers on the network the computer is connected to

Tried to find drivers the old fashioned way on the HP website, but they literally don't have the basic drivers for (at least) this specific device

Lastly, when you turn on the printer, it asks how you want to connect it, and the only options it gives are Ethernet or Wifi.

I finally caved and the user connect it to her wifi, install it via Add a Device with the WPS PIN it makes you enter, and installed it.

Tested it off VPN, on VPN, and on VPN with a program the user uses a lot, all successful. So, the only conclusion I can come to is that the computer can see the printer is connected via USB, but the printer itself can't be installed via only USB for some ungodly reason.  Why even include a USB port on the printer if you can't install it via USB.

I guess I don't really have a question, except maybe is there any way at all to install them via just USB?

Appreciate it.
