Is it possible to install this new printer without signing up for this stupid HP+ program?  I do not want to be locked into using genuine HP cartridges forever!!!!

For question What if I don't want HP+ ? From my reading, you probably have to return it and swapping for a similar printer w/o HP+

You may skip the HP Plus activation within the printer setup from within the HP Smart app, be aware that this will void the free 6 month plan and the additional 1 year warranty:
