HP Scanjet G4010 Photo Scanner

Many months ago I accidentally uninstalled the scanner software.  Unfortunately HP will not support this scanner software update because the scanner is out of warranty.  Before I screwed up and deleted the software the scanner worked perfectly.  I found that I can scan documents using the SCAN Doctor download, but that does not support the Film scanning option, only documents.  Does anyone have a fix for the initial app loading software issue?  I am currently using Windows 10 (64-bit) operating system.

Thanks, Steve

Hi @KTRP_Video,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're facing an issue with the HP Scanjet G4010 Photo Scanner where the software doesn't load after it was accidentally uninstalled. Since the scanner is no longer under warranty, and you're unable to get official support from HP,

here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue and get the scanner working with the film scanning option again:

1. Reinstall HP Scanjet G4010 Software

Even though HP may not offer updates, you can still try to reinstall the original software. Here’s how you can do that:

  • Visit HP’s official support page for the HP Scanjet G4010: HP Scanjet G4010 Software and Drivers.
  • Download the original software for your specific operating system (Windows 10, 64-bit).

2. Check Windows Compatibility Mode

Since you're using Windows 10, it's possible that the software you're trying to install is not fully compatible with it. You can try running the software in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows:

  • Right-click on the installer file and select Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Check the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 7 or Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
  • Click Apply and then try to install again.

3. Use Windows Built-in Scanner Tool

If reinstalling the original software doesn't work, try using Windows Fax and Scan or Windows Scan app, both of which might allow basic scanning functionality:

  • Windows Scan app: Available from the Microsoft Store. You can download it and check if it supports your scanner.
  • Windows Fax and Scan: Type "Windows Fax and Scan" in the Start menu, and you can use it to scan documents or images.

4. HP Scan (Windows 10 App)

While HP Scan doesn’t have film scanning support, it’s another potential tool to consider:

  • Search for HP Scan in the Microsoft Store, which might be compatible with your scanner.

5. Check Device Manager

Ensure that your scanner is properly recognized by Windows:

  • Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager).
  • Look under Imaging Devices for your HP Scanjet G4010.
  • If there's an issue, right-click and select Update driver or Uninstall device, then reconnect the scanner and allow Windows to automatically reinstall the driver.

6. Reinstall Windows Imaging Acquisition (WIA) Service

Sometimes the scanning issue could be related to the WIA service:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Scroll down and locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click and select Restart.

Refer to this document: HP Scanjet G4010 Photo Scanner User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
